“Across the isle on the bus tonight on the way home there sat a girl. She was a
few years younger than me and was busy crying her eyes out. I sat there
remembering how crying on busses isn’t good and the bad thoughts i’d had about
people who’d just sat by and done nothing as I’d cried on busses in the past.
So i decided to do something.

I was going to go and talk to her but I didn’t want her to think I was trying to
crack onto her or put her in a position where she was uncomfortable. I didn’t
want to fuck it up royally.

Instead I got a piece of paper out and wrote her a note:

Get Well Soon
Peace be with you,
pretty lady
(and I signed it with a little heart followed by my name)

I folded it in half and gathered up all my courage. I was not sure that what I
was doing was right. I didn’t know if it would work. I knew I would regret it
if i choose to do nothing.

I planed it all. I slipped smoothly across the isle and landed the note on her
seat next to her. As fast as possible I slid back and huddled up against the
furthest wall of the bus, almost cowering under my backpack. I didn’t want to
look like I was trying to be a jackass in any way, shape or form. On the
contrary I wanted to convey humility and respect.

In the reflection of the window I could see her unfold the note and read over it
twice. Then she glanced up, stared at me and smiled. Although she still looked
a total whimpering wreck, it was totally satisfying to see her smile for at
least a few seconds.

At the next stop she stood up and left but not without making eye contact and
smiling at me once again.

It was a totally worthwhile thing to do. Even though it may have gone down
really badly it was worth it and I’ll do it again because the potential for good
is incredible.

that’s all. good night.” (journal from hatelife.org 05/22/2004 10:29:54)

    —-
curtsy |ˈkərtsē| (also curtsey) noun ( pl. -sies or -seys) a woman’s or girl’s formal greeting.
ORIGIN early 16th cent.: variant of courtesy . Both forms were used to denote the expression of respect or courtesy by a gesture, esp. in phrases such as do courtesy, make courtesy, and from this arose the current use (late 16th cent.).
